Rise in E-bike usage leads to sharp increase in injuries

June 28, 2024

The use of electronic bicycles has grown exponentially in recent years, fueled by partnership programs in many regions (including here in Buffalo) that stage bikes throughout the city for affordable, short-term rental. While it may be great for the environment and more affordable for the riders, this increase in usage has come with a downside.

A study published by the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) found a troubling trend when it comes to E-bike riders. First, the increased usage leads to more than 8,000 hospital visits for injuries related to an E-bike accident annually. Many of those injuries are linked to the second finding from the report: bike helmet usage has declined almost six percent annually for the last five years. This may be due to the impulse rental of E-bikes by consumers that do not have a helmet with them. Regardless of the cause, it is a trend that has led to an increase in the need for legal representation for those injured as the result of an E-bike accident.
